6 things you really shouldn’t bring on a plane

Going away for a holiday? Packing for a trip can be tricky business – you're trying your hardest not to forget anything, and therefore, you bring everything. Seems like a good idea right? Wrong!

Take it from us: there are just some things that don't travel well.

When you get to your destination, you don't want to deal with the crisis that can come from an exploded sunscreen bottle. You just want to go out and have fun – not send for dry cleaning. So, as you're getting ready for your holiday, avoid packing these six items that don't travel well.

1. Nail polish

True, nail polish is under the liquid limit of 3.4 ounces or 100 millilitres, and it's a good way to pass the time during layovers. Not only does nail polish totally reek – especially in a enclosed space like an airplane cabin – but certain polishes do not travel well.

No matter how tight you close the cap, the paint can leak out all over your bag. And even if some of the polish survives the leak, it likely won't paint the same way again. Just get some new colours when you land!

2. Guide books

You want to make your bag as light as possible, just for comforts sake! Guidebooks are only going to weigh you down and likely make you a bit cranky. If you want to learn more about your destination, read up beforehand, or better yet, download the guidebook onto your phone or tablet. Trust us, your shoulders are going to thank you.

3. Valuables

How many horror stories have you heard where an airline loses a bag that has the owner's most prized possessions stored inside? Too many times. You likely don't need to have your most expensive rubies and diamonds with you on your holiday, so keep those at home. Because even if you get the bag back, it likely isn't worth the panic attack before it is recovered.

4. Shampoo

Why are people still doing this? Hotels provide mini bottles of shampoo that are usually pretty nice too! There is nothing worse than opening a bag to an exploded bottle of shampoo or conditioner. Here, some think this issue can be avoided by putting it in a plastic bag, but that's not always a fool-proof method! Skip the shampoo and just wait for the supplies at the hotel.

5. Perfume

Do you know what bottles aren't made for bumpy flights? And do you also know what smell is really hard to get out of your clothes? Perfume. If a bottle breaks during transit, you're going to be in a bit of a pickle. There will be glass everywhere and the perfume itself will cling to your clothes, and even potentially stain your threads.

6. Fruits and vegetables

You might think that you're being healthy bringing your own fruits and vegetables on the plane for a mid-flight snack but you'd be mistaken. Yes, your produce might be more fresh than what the vendors are selling next to your gate, but it bruises relatively quickly and can even stain your bag if you squish it hard enough. Additionally, if you're travelling internationally, your food might not even be allowed into the new country as they have tight import restrictions. Don't worry though, there are still tonnes of foods that you can enjoy that are also TSA-friendly!
