Baby on board: Tips for travelling with an infant

We've all been there: Sitting on quiet plane, when suddenly the wail of an irritated baby erupts, ruining the peace. It's hard to get mad at a baby – they can't help but cry, after all – but it can be frustrating, as you can't easily escape the noise.

But now you're the one with the baby in your lap and the passengers across the aisle are anxiously looking at you. Is your baby going to behave?

Because you've been the disgruntled passenger before, you know how important it is to try and keep your baby calm during the flight. Of course, that is usually easier said than done! Today, we're going to share some tips on how you can make travelling with an infant an easy experience.

How can you make travelling with a baby easier on everyone? Just consider these tips. How can you make travelling with a baby easier on everyone?

Plan the flights around your child

Babies typically have pretty frequent sleeping patterns which you should use to your advantage. Try to plan your flights around your child's nap schedule so they sleep well on the plane. It might even be a good idea to use ear plugs to allow them to snooze easier.

Pack extra supplies

The trick to having a smooth flight comes down to the packing you do for your child beforehand. You want to make sure your backup supplies have backup supplies. If your baby rolls through a diaper and then has an another accident five minutes later, you don't want to be without another. This includes packing some extra food, as the airline may not have baby-friendly food.

Don't forget to pack some home comforts. Being in a new place can be unsettling for babies, which is why they start to get upset in the first place. Having something with a familiar scent or texture will help your child feel more at home

Having toys on hand will also keep them occupied and entertained.

Bring entertainment

Try to keep your baby up and playing during the first half of the flight so you can tire them out for when the plane lands. Of course, if they wake up during the landing then you can distract them with their toys. Having toys on hand will also keep them occupied and entertained, and can distract them should they become too fussy.

That said, you'll want to make sure they have their favourite toy or blanket, as this will serve as a source of comfort for them in a place that isn't as familiar.

Give them something to chew on

The first time you felt your ears pop during the plane's descent was probably a little shocking and maybe a little painful, even for an adult. A baby won't know what's going on so this is often where the meltdown happens. Giving them something like a bottle or pacifier to suck on will help them pop their ears when the pressure gets to be too much.

Don't forget parents, babies cry! You don't have to apologise if your child gets fussy.
