China – a growing market for Australian travellers

There are a number of traditional destinations that we love heading to on holiday. From the winter wonderland of New Zealand's South Island to the sandy beaches of Thailand, or even the cobbled streets of London, certain locations will always draw Australians.

While those places will always remain popular, there is now a desire to explore new regions and countries – often with different cultural norms to ours. One great example is China.

Melbourne Airport – the gateway to China

In early November, Melbourne Airport announced that the seventh Chinese airline would be landing in the Victorian capital. Hainan Airlines, China's fourth-largest airline, will fly between Melbourne and the cities of Xi'an and Changsha – two of the country's growing tourism hubs.

Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Simon Gandy explained that China is becoming a top destination for Australians.

"We are delighted to welcome Hainan Airlines to our family at Melbourne Airport," he said.

"As the third Chinese carrier to be announced in 2016, Hainan Airlines will also offer new opportunities for travel-loving Victorians to explore even more of what China has to offer, with direct flights to some of China's most iconic destination cities."

Xi'an and Changsha

When most people think about China, cities such as Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai spring to mind. However, the world's most populous country has much more to offer than these three urban hubs.

  • Xi'an

Xi'an, located in northwest China, is the capital of the Shaanxi Province. What you might not know about this city is that it is home to the Terracotta Army of the Qin Dynasty – a beautiful collection of sculptures that were buried with the first Emperor of China. Dating back thousands of years, the Terracotta Army is a true sight to behold.

The city is also the eastern terminal of the famous Silk Road.

  • Changsha

Changsha is found in central China and is the capital city of the Hunan Province. The city is built around two of China's most underrated attractions – Mount Yuelu and Orange Island. Climb up the 300m Mount Yuelu on a clear day and take in the breathtaking views of modern China before heading to Orange Island to watch the nightly firework displays.
