How to eat healthier while you travel

Travelling can be as exciting as it can be exhausting. It can seem tough to maintain a healthy lifestyle while trotting the globe.

What if we told you that eating healthy on your holiday doesn't have to be a hassle? Here are some easy tips to keep in mind next time you go on an adventure departing from Melbourne:

1. Prepare snacks

One of the best – and easiest – ways to avoid eating airplane meals is to bring your own snacks from home. While airport security won't let you take liquids and gels over 100ml with you on the plane, you are allowed bites like energy balls, bananas, apples and nuts. Packing some of these small nibbles in your carry-on will stop you from going hungry without turning to the salty or sweet snack offered in flight.

Additionally, once you're through security, anything you buy at the terminal is allowed on the flight. So now's your chance to grab some bottled water, a sandwich or salad. Alternatively, if you want to eat the airline provided meals, go for the veggie-laden option.

2. Water, water, water

It's an old mantra but still oh so relevant. Travelling can dehydrate you, which will cause headaches, increase jet lag symptoms and potentially make you crave junk food. The remedy? Drink lots of water.

Keeping hydrated will wash out toxins, manage your cravings and make you feel more energised after a long day of travelling.

3. Go with the healthy options

Once you're on the ground again, your holiday can truly begin. And if you're anything like us, you're likely to want to explore the local culinary action. A key thing to remember when dining out is that while salads in general are great for you, dressings can be your downfall – ask for a side of olive oil and go easy on the croutons!

You shouldn't be afraid to order a burger though. Simply ask the waiter to replace the bun with lettuce leaves, keep all sauces on the side or replace regular fries with grilled veggies.

4. Stick to your five-a-day

Speaking of vegetables, make an effort to get in your five servings of fruit and veggies each day. Maintaining a healthy intake of fibre and vitamins will keep you feeling full longer, ultimately cutting down on your cravings.
